Screening for brain-related comorbidities in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Construction, reliability, and validity of the BIND screener

Lay Summary

People with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) can experience challenges beyond muscle weakness, including difficulties with learning, attention, behavior, emotions, and social skills. However, these brain-related challenges are not always recognized early, which can delay support and care. This study aimed to create a short and reliable questionnaire that helps identify individuals with DMD who may be at risk for these brain-related difficulties.

The researchers developed a simple 18-question screening tool called the BIND (Brain Involvement iN Dystrophinopathies) Screener, which can be completed by individuals with DMD or their caregivers. It was tested in over 800 people with DMD across a wide age range and multiple countries. The results showed that the tool is reliable, works well across ages, and aligns with formal cognitive and behavioral assessments. The BIND Screener can help professionals and families recognise potential brain-related concerns earlier, so that individuals with DMD can receive appropriate evaluations, support, and interventions sooner, and thus improving overall care and quality of life.
